Last Action Hero - a Movie Review

Arnold Schwarzenegger as Jack Slater!

Last Action Hero is an underrated classic!

This is satire done right the movie is a parody within a parody. Arnold Schwarzenegger is Jack Slater A.K.A Schwarzenegger is playing himself or rather “Ahnold” the cliché action hero we've come to expect. This movie is loud, obnoxious, over-the-top and unbelievable; pretty much how one expects “Ahnold” to be. This isn't my favorite Schwarzenegger film but I would consider this his best role. This is Schwarzenegger in his prime. I don’t think anyone else could have played this role; much like the Terminator this role was written for him.

Danny and Jack Slater
Last Action Hero has a lot of negative reviews but I think people misunderstand what this movie was trying to do. This movie came out in the early 90’s pretty much the heyday of big dumb action movies. The audience looked at this as a straight up action movie rather than a satirical parody. There are so many in-jokes and references to 90’s pop culture. Had this movie has come out 15 years later it would be held in higher regard. This movie does a far better job satirizing big action films than another more famous Schwarzenegger movie. True Lies anyone? Yes I went there and don’t get me wrong I freaking love True Lies! Just saying Last Action Hero is a better example of action parody done right.

**Spoiler Alert! If You haven't seen this movie yet... Proceed at your own risk!**

Bridgette Wilson, Austin O’Brien
The plot of Last Action Hero is pretty simple; Danny (Austin O’Brien) a 12-year-old boy who is a huge action movie fan. This boy’s favorite action star is none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger and his favorite film series is “Jack Slater”. Danny spends most of his free time (well all his time) at a local movie theater. The projectionist gives him a supposed magic ticket à la “Willy Wonka” that transports him into the movie world! Danny finds himself smack-dab-in-the-middle of a Schwarzenegger movie!!! But Schwarzenegger isn't the famous Hollywood action star he’s Jack Slater the character from the movie.  Slater to me seems like a mash-up of the cop from Lethal Weapon, Magnum P.I. and Dirty Harry. A cocky temperamental cop who would rather shoot first and ask questions later.

Danny tries many times to convince Slater that he is indeed living in a movie world to hilarious result. One example is when they got to a local Video Store trying to find the Schwarzenegger movies; of course they don’t have any! A Terminator 2 cutout has been redone with Sylvester Stallone instead. This movie is full of clichés every character is a cardboard cutout. This movie delivers everything one would expect on a freaking silver platter! Everything is in-your-face but that’s the idea isn't it? Last Action Hero knows what it is and never takes itself seriously. As I have stated earlier if this movie came out today it would be hailed by critics as a nostalgic parody of everything 90’s. One of my favorite in-jokes is a running gag of references to Mozart and the movie Amadeus involving actor F. Murray Abraham. Another is the introduction a Slater’s teenage daughter (Bridgette Wilson) who is supposed to have just magically appeared in the 4th chapter of the Slater series? The unfortunate mistake this movie made was timing people don’t usually like when you make fun of what cool right now. Like take for example if the 70’s show came out in the 70’s it wouldn't be as funny you know?

Arnold Schwarzenegger as Hamlet
To be, or not to be?
This movie takes turn when Benedict (Charles Dance of Game of Thrones fame) the bad guy from Slater’s world breaks into our world and tries to cause mayhem. Unfortunately the real world doesn't work like the movie world. Slater quickly realizes this and becomes melancholy. Benedict figures if he kills the real Arnold Schwarzenegger then the unstoppable Jack Slater will also die. He pulls Slater’s arch nemesis ‘the Ripper’ out of the movies to do the deed. I just wish they would have done more with the real Schwarzenegger/Slater duality. Last Action Hero is a great satire of the 90’s and action movies in general. If you haven’t seen Last Action Hero I would recommend you do; this movie will be loved by actions fans. Those who aren't fans of action movies will find the humor and satire appealing.  There are a few surprises I don’t want to spoil for those who haven’t seen this movie; also keep an eye out for an awesome Shakespearean scene!!!
