Orphan - a Movie Review

Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan)
In the modern world where you know everything about a movie long before it even comes out, it’s hard to find something that surprises. The way trailers are shot, they usually give away plot secrets. Like the saying goes, “all the good parts are in the previews”. We know from the trailer that Esther seems too good to be true! We quickly find out there’s something wrong with Esther, she’s a messed up kid and she might be a killer. Orphan is one of those rare cinematic gems. Sure it’s not Oscar worthy but does that even matter? Come on people ‘the Hurt Locker’ beat freaking ‘Avatar’ for best picture!!!

Orphan will keep you guessing until the end and trust me you won’t see it coming. Is Esther possessed by the devil? Esther is a very deeply disturbed person. Isabelle Fuhrman who plays Esther is an amazing young actress, like Dakota Fanning, Leonardo DiCaprio & Drew Barrymore. Isabelle is one of those rare child stars that can pull off a mature and complicated role. I cannot wait see what she does next.

More after the break.

Orphan doesn’t take the usual path when it comes to messed up kids; there is nothing supernatural behind Esther’s powers. In fact she is a straight up psychopath a cold hearted monster lurks behind her innocent smile. This quickly becomes that creepy menacing stare. Orphan likes to play with your head. I love movies that do that keep you on edge but very few do it well. They will throw in plot twist after twist after twist. Orphan does do this but the game unfolds slowly before your eyes. Orphan doesn’t go off on some crazy tangent or throw you a wild twist that doesn’t make sense. Orphan doesn’t follow any of the usual clichés which is why I enjoyed it so much.

Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan)
This movie is creepy and hardcore do not let your children watch it! If you don’t have children this movie will probably convince you not to have any. The main couple of this movie has two children already a son who doesn’t seem interested in anything and a deaf/mute daughter. The family recently suffered a great tragedy losing their youngest daughter. Esther seems to be the dream foster child that can bring this family back together even if she is a little misunderstood, but you start to wonder what’s wrong with her is she crazy? Why does she dress like ‘Anne of Green Gables’ why does she kill; what is the big twist ending? You will have to see the movie to figure all that out!

The only problem I had with this movie is the opening dream sequence. I’m not one of those reviewers that spoil a movie. Trust me Orphan is one of those movies where you don’t want or need to know what’s going to happen. Orphan is one hell of a ride.

Rating: ☆  Awesome Movie Dude!
